On October 2, the Lomira girls cross country team won the Division 3 Nightfall Classic with 68 points.
The meet brought together 46 teams and approximately 400 runners, with Division 2 and Division 3 athletes competing together. The field included 29 Division 3 schools, with approximately 230 D3 runners and 170 D2 runners.
“This is the kind of night that you hope your athletes get to experience,” said Lomira Head Coach Tyler Witkowski. “You can train every day, run hundreds of miles, and compete in dozens of meets, but there are only so many opportunities to race under the Friday night lights against this kind of competition. That is a cool lifetime experience for these kids.”
Junior Whitney Witkowski led the Lions with a sixth-place finish in 19:50, breaking the 20-minute barrier for the second time of the week. She was followed by Elinorah Langjahr, who finished 11th in 20:40
Freshman Carter Knoop with a 14th-place finish in 20:57, while junior Josie Christian placed 17th in 21:10.
“This team continues to show that they belong in these big meets,” said Witkowski. “They won't back away from competition. They want to see how good they can be, and nights like this give them a chance to find out.”
The Lomira boys team finished in 20th place at the Nightfall Classic.
“The boys are continuing to close the gap,” said Witkowski. “We're seeing more personal bests and better team depth. They may not be where they ultimately want to be yet, but they are improving, and that's what you want to see this time of year.”
On October 29, the Lomira girls cross country team finished in second place with 45 points at the Dave Drexler Invite in Kewaskum.
Whitney Witkowski finished in fourth, Elinorah Langjahr in seventh, and Carter Knoop in eighth to lead the way for the Lions at the Invite.
The Lomira boys team finished in ninth place with 219 points at the Invitational.
Lomira cross country teams will host their annual home cross country meet on October 8 at 4 p.m.
