On Sept. 29 at the Theresa Public Library, Rob Bowe from the Theresa Historical Society took attendees of his presentation “Tales Of Theresa” through the history of the area and the land.
Starting out with the Native Americans who occupied the land first and ending with how it looks today, listeners were able to gather a better sense of appreciation for the land that they live and work on.
Bowe explained the rich history of farming and how that, along with trading, is what brought settlers into this area. In 1846 on Oct. 6, almost exactly 180 years ago, the first farmers filed their paperwork to get their land and settle in Theresa.
Those who live, work or travel through Theresa have likely seen the Theresa Marsh and Wildlife Area. From 1846 to 1856 that marsh was actually a lake called Lake Theresa. This was due to a dam being constructed by Solomon Juneau, the man who first started Theresa by creating a trading post in 1833.
Those interested in learning more about Theresa’s history are encouraged to visit the historical society or listen in on another presentation.
