On Monday, Sept. 28, the City of Mayville held several meetings, including a Special Common Council meeting, Public Safety Committee Meeting, Public Works Committee, Finance Committee and Personnel Committee.
Special Common Council
The Special Common Council meeting was very short. There were no citizen comments and only a few items of action on the agenda.
The first item was a public hearing on Resolution 6090-2026, “Final Resolution Levying Special Assessments for the 2026 Road Reconstruction Project a/k/a the Muzzy, Allen, and Grove Streets Project.” The final costs of the project came at a lower cost than what was previously predicted during their first meeting regarding the project. After closing the hearing, the Council then approved the resolution, giving homeowners the three options: pay in full or pay in a three or five year span at a 3.5% interest rate.
The Council also approved operator licenses for the following applicants: Sarah Hanna, Keith Hoover, Randi Twardokus, Laura Hoover-Vossekuil and Deborah Ross.
Public Safety Committee
Mayville Police, Fire and EMS Departments each gave their monthly reports during the Public Safety Committee meeting that followed the Common Council.
The police department reported having 626 calls for service since the last meeting, bringing them to 4,027 calls to date for the year. This is up 538 calls from where they were this time last year. They also announced that their staffing is up to full capacity, however they are seeking a new school crossing guard for before and after school. Those interested can receive an application at the police department or City Hall.
The Mayville Police Department also gave a few reminders to the public. These were all stated by Chief Tollner:
“Parents please talk with your children about safely riding their electric bikes and scooters… check for signs and wear your protective gear.”
“Winter is quickly approaching and prepare for the winter parking rules in a few months by purchasing winter parking decals from city hall and parking lot permits from the police department as needed.”
“Lastly… feral animals are wild animals, even cats, and so due care should be used when encountering them. It is not a good idea to engage any wild animal and they should be left alone. The feeding of stray or feral animals is against ordinance, as it draws in animals who otherwise wouldn’t be around and can endanger people and pets.”
The fire department responded to 16 calls since the last meeting, including responding to a barn fire in Watertown and an apartment fire in Lomira. This brings their year-to-date calls to 101. The department also announced they will be assisting in the Mayville Homecoming bonfire on Oct. 8. Oct. 4-10 is Fire Prevention Week, and the fire department will be holding a poster contest with the schools using poster boards donated by TAB Products. The fire department will also be hosting an open house from 5-8 p.m. on Oct. 15. Finally, the department announced that their second round of biannual city inspections have begun, and they are waiting to hear back from the Wisconsin DNR about a $20,000 50/50 grant for new equipment like pagers and radios.
During the EMS report, they announced that they are currently at 1,155 calls for service. They are averaging 130 calls per month and it puts them at 323 calls ahead of this time last year. For community events, EMS announced that they raised $10,600 at the Mayville Gun Club fundraiser on Aug. 29. They will also be hosting a blood drive with the TAG Center on Oct. 14 from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This blood drive is for a little girl named Bryn who has leukemia and often needs blood transfusions. They had a blond drive last year for the same little girl, and their goal this year is to get 100 units of blood. To register for the event, visit the EMS or TAG Center Facebook pages, but walk-ins are also welcome. Also during the Public Safety Committee meeting, the committee approved to recommend to council an agreement with Paralign Health – a mobile app that assists with unnecessary 911 calls – and agreed to recommend to council a three year contract with Emergency Communications Systems for tornado sirens inspections and maintenance.
Public Works Committee
After approving the minutes for the Aug. 24 meeting, the TAG Center then gave their monthly report. They announced they are continuing to work with TAG Inc. on energy efficiency and solar project studies. The TAG Center also started implementing new pool schedules on Sept. 8. Swim lessons have started with a total of 371 swim lesson participants for 2026, and fall recreations include pickleball and volleyball starting in November. They are also going to work with Mayville High School for their Academic and Career Planning event on Oct. 6, and they are hosting a TAG Community Try It Day on Oct. 10 from 8 a.m. to noon.
The Public Works and Parks Department then gave their report, announcing that October will be the last month for twice a month brush pickup, meaning that starting in November, brush pickup will only be on the last Monday of the month. They also stated how the new four-way stop sign is working well and the school is very grateful for it. They also announced that they plan to work on a new walking trail in Ziggler Park thanks to donations from Birt City USA.
