The Mayville cross country teams got their first taste of racing under the lights Friday, Oct. 2, competing at the Nightfall Classic at Tuscumbia Golf Course.
The Cardinal girls turned in a strong performance, finishing fifth (201 pts.) among 15 Division 2 teams and 165 runners, while the Mayville boys placed 12th (316 pts.) among 176 runners.
Head coach Bob Berry said the meet produced several strong performances, with eight Cardinals recording season-best times and six others narrowly missing personal bests.
“We ran well,” Berry said. “This was our first time running in a night meet, and everybody seemed to enjoy the experience.”
The Nightfall Classic offered a different atmosphere from a traditional afternoon cross country meet, with the Cardinals competing after dark against a large field of schools.
The Cardinals have a busy Homecoming week ahead, traveling to Laconia on Tuesday, Oct. 6, before competing at Campbellsport on Thursday, Oct. 8. Thursday’s meet begins at 4 p.m.
