Mayville Pulls Away in Second Half to Defeat Laconia

Posted

The Mayville boys basketball team secured a 66-58 victory over Laconia on Tuesday, Feb. 4, after a strong second-half performance.

The game was deadlocked at 27-27 heading into halftime, but Mayville outscored Laconia 39-31 in the final two quarters to claim the win.

Austin Thoreson led the way for the Cardinals with 24 points, followed by Talan Meyer with 16. Joren Schlender added 10 points, while Tate Drinkwine contributed nine.

Mayville head coach Brett Kirmse credited the team’s preparation and defensive execution for the victory. “I would say our adjustment was we expected to see a 2-3 zone and we used the preparation in the week to be ready for it,” the coach said. “We executed enough to answer all the runs they went on. The big key for us was defense. We held two all-conference players below averages and defended super strong as a team all night. I’m really happy for the boys.”

Mayville finished the game with 25 field goals, including five three-pointers, and converted nine free throws. The team also dominated on the boards, grabbing 37 rebounds, and shared the ball effectively with 16 assists.

Mayville Falls to Conference Leader St. Mary’s Springs
