Mayville Rotary to Join Worldwide Fight Against Polio With Oct. 24 Walk

Posted

The Rotary Club of Mayville is inviting the community to put on its walking shoes Oct. 24 and join a worldwide effort to help end polio.

In recognition of World Polio Day, Mayville Rotary will participate in the World’s Largest Polio Walk, a coordinated event bringing Rotary members and their communities together to raise awareness of the ongoing effort to eradicate the disease.

Mayville’s walk registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Open Door Coffeehouse, 20 S. Main St. with the walk beginning at 10 a.m. The event is open to the public, and families and community members are encouraged to participate.

“If polio is not fully eradicated, we could see a global resurgence of the disease with as many as 200,000 new cases each year within the next 10 years,” Mayville Rotary President Rhonda Roehrig said. “Our club is participating to bring awareness to our community.”

Mayville Rotary will be one of many clubs participating throughout Rotary Region 36, Zones 25 and 29. Organizers expect approximately 36,620 Rotarians and 964 Rotaractors across 11 states and two countries to take part in local walks.

Rotary has been a leader in the global effort to eradicate polio for more than 35 years through its End Polio Now campaign. Since Rotary began its polio eradication work, cases worldwide have been reduced by more than 99.9%.

Despite that progress, Rotary continues its efforts until the disease is fully eradicated. World Polio Day events are designed to keep attention on the issue and build support for completing that work.

Participants in the Mayville walk are encouraged to wear Rotary or End Polio Now apparel, bring friends and family and share their participation on social media.
