Mayville senior pitcher Allie Schwirtz reached a major career milestone Saturday, April 12, recording her 500th career strikeout in dominant fashion as the Cardinals shut out Xavier 7-0.
Schwirtz was lights-out in the circle, striking out 14 batters over seven innings while allowing just three hits and no walks. The complete-game shutout marked another stellar outing for the veteran hurler, whose 500th strikeout came in the bottom of the third inning.
“Allie reaching 500 strikeouts is a great example of her dedication to the program. Allie has shown nothing but integrity when it comes to pitching and hitting. This achievement really shows how much dedication she has put into this program.” Head Coach Ashley Krueger continued, “Allie has done an amazing job driving the team forward and this accomplishment further proves this.”
Senior Allie Schwirtz reflected on what stood out in her Mayville career, “The game that stood out to me the most was pitching both state games as a sophomore. It gave me the extra drive to keep working hard and to become a better pitcher.”
Offensively, the Cardinals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and added runs in the fifth and seventh to put the game out of reach. Kate Aumann launched a solo home run and finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and five total bases. Pearl Witek entered the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking over in left field. She made the most of her opportunity at the plate, ripping a double in her second at-bat after being subbed in.
Lilian Mansueto added two hits and an RBI, while Morgan Manning contributed a hit, an RBI, and a run scored. The Cardinals committed no errors defensively and capitalized on four Xavier miscues.
Mayville improves to (6-1, 2-0) on the season.
