Rough Start to Busy Week for Cardinals Fastpitch

Posted

The Mayville Cardinals softball opened a four-game week with a 14-1 road loss to Campbellsport High School softball on Monday, April 20.

Campbellsport jumped out early with two runs in the first inning and pulled away with a four-run third and eight-run fourth to end the game early in five innings. The Cardinals were limited to three hits but managed to break through in the second inning for their lone run.

Allison Muche drove in Mayville’s only run, while Janel Youngbeck, Pear Witek, and Muche each recorded a hit. Leni Carpenter scored the Cardinals’ lone run after reaching base earlier in the second inning.

Youngbeck started in the circle, pitching three innings with three strikeouts. Megan Promersberger worked one inning in relief. Defensive miscues proved costly, as four errors contributed to extended innings and scoring opportunities for the Cougars.

Cardinals Show Fight in Close Loss at NFDL

The Mayville Cardinals softball team turned in a competitive effort in game two of the week, falling 4-2 on the road to North Fond du Lac softball on Tuesday.

Despite being held without a hit, the Cardinals capitalized on patience at the plate, drawing five walks and pushing across two runs in the sixth inning to cut into the deficit. Janel Youngbeck and Pearl Witek each scored for Mayville during the late rally in the sixth inning.

North Fond du Lac broke through with single runs in the first and third innings before adding two more in the fifth, highlighted by a home run from Allison Now. That proved enough offense as the Orioles held off the Cardinals down the stretch.

Youngbeck delivered a strong performance in the circle, going six innings while allowing just four hits and striking out six. Three of the four runs allowed were earned, as Mayville’s defense committed two errors behind her.

At the plate, Rozalynn Selsing battled through four tough at-bats despite facing a high-strikeout pitcher, while the Cardinals as a team showed improved discipline by working multiple walks and forcing deep counts.

Early Surge by Laconia Overwhelms Cardinals at Home

The Mayville Cardinals (0-7,-5) softball struggled to recover from a fast start by Laconia High School softball (4-1,0-1), falling 19-1 in a home contest Thursday, April 23.

Laconia erupted for 11 runs in the opening inning and added six more in the second to take control early. The Spartans finished with 17 hits, including multiple extra-base hits and three home runs to power the offense.

Mayville’s lone run came in the first inning. Junior Rozalynn Selsing reached base and later scored, while freshman Megan Promersberger was credited with the RBI. The Cardinals were limited to just one hit on the day, coming from Pearl Witek.

Janel Youngbeck started in the circle, pitching 1.1 innings before Lillian Mansueto came on in relief for the final 1.2 innings. The Cardinals issued eight walks, which, combined with Laconia’s aggressive hitting, contributed to the high run total.

Despite the loss, Mayville showed patience at the plate with three walks and will look to build on small positives as the young squad continues to develop through a challenging stretch of the schedule.

Xavier’s Fast Start Too Much for Cardinals at Home

The Mayville Cardinals softball ran into a hot-hitting Xavier High School softball squad Saturday, April 25, falling 19-2 in a home matchup.

Xavier set the tone early, erupting for 10 runs in the opening inning and adding two more in the second to quickly take control. The Hawks continued to apply pressure throughout, finishing with 15 hits in the five-inning contest.

Mayville answered with two runs in the first inning. Janel Youngbeck reached base and later scored, while Lillian Mansueto drove in both Cardinal runs with a double. Pearl Witek also crossed the plate after working one of her two walks in the game.

The Cardinals managed just two hits on the day, coming from Youngbeck and Mansueto, but showed patience at the plate by drawing six walks.

Megan Promersberger pitched all five innings for Mayville, recording two strikeouts. Defensive struggles proved costly, as 10 errors allowed Xavier to extend innings and capitalize on additional scoring opportunities.

The Cardinals (0-8) continue with a busy week in conference play, traveling to Omro (4-7) on Monday, April 27. The team travels to Lomira (6-2) on Tuesday, April 28, and returns to Zeigler Park on  Thursday, April 30, hosting St. Mary’s Springs (3-4)  at 5 p.m and will take it back on the road Friday, May 1, traveling to Lakeside Lutheran (5-2) for non-conference play, first pitch 5 p.m.
