Mayville hosted Winnebago Lutheran Academy (WLA) on Thursday, Jan. 15, for Parents Night, a special evening that began with wrestlers greeting their parents on the mat and presenting the traditional rose prior to the National Anthem. With a limited lineup, the Cardinals had four wrestlers compete on the night. The dual opened with WLA collecting four wins by forfeit in the 106–126 pound weight classes to take an early lead.
Freshman Mitchell Roa-Brown got Mayville on the board with a win at 132 pounds. Freshman Kalvin Ditscheit came up short at 138 pounds, before last year’s state qualifier Parker Bangart earned a victory at 144. Dominic Schuelke added another win at 165 pounds, and Kellen Schaefer closed the night with a win by forfeit at 215. Despite the strong individual efforts, Mayville fell 42-22 to WLA.
"With a small squad, it is difficult to find practice partners the right size and skill level,” said Head Coach Joe Spudich. “There are lots of drills and practice techniques we cannot do because of our limited numbers. The kids just continue to work hard and try to overcome any issues.”
The Cardinals return to action Tuesday, Jan. 20, with a road match at Dodgeland that will take place after print time, before coming home Thursday for Kids and Senior Night. Mayville will host Lomira with the first whistle set for 7 p.m.
