Mayville’s Parker Bangart Competes at State Wrestling Meet

Posted

Thursday, March 13, 2025 - Mayville - Mayville freshman Parker Bangart capped off an impressive season with a trip to the WIAA State Wrestling Meet in Madison, becoming the first Mayville wrestler in 10 years to qualify for state and the first freshman wrestler to ever qualify. Competing in the 120-pound weight class, Bangart gained valuable experience on the big stage.

Seeded eighth with a record of 31-12, he faced ninth-seeded Bryer Caves (43-17) of Lodi in the opening round, falling by pin in 2:54. In the consolation round, he took on Noah Walker (22-8) of Ellsworth but was pinned at 2:28, ending his tournament run.

Despite the tough competition, Bangart’s state appearance as a freshman is a promising sign for the future of Mayville wrestling. He finished the season with a 31-13 record and was voted the team’s Most Valuable Wrestler.

Mayville Varsity Wrestling Head Coach, Joe Spudich stated, “The team showed steady improvement from last year.”

The team consisted of senior Soren Kewley (8-2), juniors Gerald Bromley (13-9) and Colton Carpenter (13-16), sophomores Kellen Schaefer (13-9), Logan Puls (12-14), and first-year wrestler Phoenix Ellingson (3-12). Freshmen included Parker Bangart (31-13), Dominic Schuelke (13-9), and Ian Meyrose (0-0, injured).

Kewley and Carpenter were chosen as team captains. Bromley was voted Most Improved, while Kewley was given the Coaches Award for his leadership and dedication throughout his four-year career.

“The team has a strong core returning next year,” continued Spudich.  “Hopefully eighth graders and new additions can fill in around this core and form a strong improved team.”
