The Mayville boys’ basketball team wrapped up play over the holiday break with a split in non-conference action, earning a hard-fought road win before running into a tough matchup to open the new year. Despite the mixed results, the Cardinals enter January tied with Lomira for first place in the Flyway Conference.
Mayville closed out pre-holiday play with a gritty 72–68 road victory at Kewaskum, leaning on strong senior leadership and timely shooting to pull out the four-point win on Monday, Dec. 22.
Senior Talan Meyer led all scorers with 19 points, while also posting a dominant all-around performance with 13 rebounds, seven assists, three steals, and a block. Senior Braxton Wiese added 14 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting night, and junior Joe Promersberger chipped in 12 points, knocking down a pair of three-pointers and dishing out four assists without a turnover.
Mayville shot 48 percent from the field and an impressive 55 percent from three-point range, finishing with 16 assists and 10 steals. Defensively, the Cardinals added five blocks and came up with key stops late to seal the road win in a tightly-contested game.
Returning to action Friday, Jan. 2, after the holiday layoff, Mayville hosted Columbus on Pep Band Alumni Night, welcoming former band members back to the gym for a special atmosphere. On the court, the Cardinals struggled to find an offensive rhythm against a strong Columbus squad in a 74–39 loss.
Looking ahead, Mayville (5-2, 4-0) resumed Flyway Conference action after print time on Tuesday, Jan. 6, hosting Laconia (3-7, 2-2) at Mayville High School. The Cardinals will then remain at home to face Lake Country Classical Academy (2-7) on Thursday, Jan. 8, in non-conference play, with tipoff scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
The Cardinals look to maintain their spot atop the conference standings alongside Lomira.
