The Mayville boys and girls track and field teams continued to build momentum March 28 at the Watertown Indoor Relays, turning in another strong overall performance against primarily Division 1 competition.
As a program, we combined for four first-place relay finishes and 10 runner-up finishes, along with 52 performances that improved on last year’s marks at this same meet—something that really stands out this early in the season.
Our first-place finishes came from several groups. On the girls' side, Lydia Case, Destiny Giese, and Helen Vanderloop took first in the pole vault relay. For the boys, Mac Livingston, Joe Robson, and Owen Bronecki matched that effort with a first-place finish in their pole vault relay. We also saw first-place performances from the boys' jumps relay team of Emerson Mittelstadt, Andy Chen, and Braxton Wiese, as well as the high jump relay team of Mittelstadt, Livingston, and Wiese.
Individually, we had some standout efforts as well. Aubree Koput won the high jump, and Lydia Case took first in the pole vault. On the boys' side, Mac Livingston and Emerson Mittelstadt went one-two in both hurdle races, continuing to show their strength in those events. Emerson also cleared a personal-best 6’2” in the high jump, while Braxton Wiese hit a personal best of 20' 3.75” in the long jump.
We also had a number of strong second-place finishes across both teams. The boys' 4-lap relay team of Wiese, Chen, Robson, and Isaiah Gregory ran one of the most exciting races of the day, finishing second by just one-hundredth of a second. The boys' 55-meter dash relay team of Wiese, Chen, and Robson also took second.
For the girls, runner-up finishes came from the high jump relay team of Koput, Vanderloop, and Sidney Davis; the 1600m relay team of Davis, Meta Genz, and Crystall Mueller; and the 4-lap relay team of Giese, Case, Olivia Steiner, and Koput. The 6-lap relay team of Steiner, Giese, Case, and Bella Wege added another second, along with the distance medley team of Alex Shoemaker, Giese, Wege, and Genz, and the 3200m relay team of Davis, Wege, Genz, and Mueller.
What stood out most from this meet was the level of competition and how our athletes responded.
“This was a very competitive meet with a lot of Division 1 schools, and I was really impressed with how our kids stepped up,” Head Coach Bob Berry said. “Across the board, we competed hard, and the number of improved performances shows we’re moving in the right direction. It’s exciting to see where this group can go.”
Mayville will return to Watertown next week for a 10-team invite, which will serve as the final indoor meet of the season before heading outdoors with Mayville hosting the Berry Invite on Thursday, April 9, with a start time of 4 p.m.
