In their second home conference matchup of the week, the Mayville Cardinals delivered a strong all-around performance, shutting out St. Mary’s Springs 2–0 behind a dominant outing from Allie Schwirtz on Thursday, April 24, at Ziegler Park.
Schwirtz was locked in from the start, throwing a complete-game two-hitter with nine strikeouts and just one walk. The senior controlled the pace throughout and received solid defensive support behind her to keep Springs off the board.
Mayville’s offense came through with timely hits, scoring once in the third and again in the sixth to secure the win. Schwirtz helped her own cause with an RBI single, while Izzy McFadden and Pearl Witek each added a hit and a run scored. Morgan Manning also chipped in with a base hit, and Janel Youngbeck contributed with a sacrifice.
The Cardinals stranded just three runners, staying efficient at the plate and limiting mistakes. Each team committed one error, but Mayville’s clean play in key moments made the difference.
With the win, Mayville bounced back from a tough early-week loss to Lomira and secured a key conference victory, pulling the Cardinals into a four-way tie for first place with Laconia, Lomira, and Springs.
Looking into upcoming play, the Lady Card’s take it on the road traveling to Campbellsport on Tuesday, April 29 for a conference match-up and travel to Horicon for non-conference play on Thursday, May 1 with first pitch at 5 p.m.
Cardinals Fall Short in Tight Battle with Lomira
On a warm and sunny Tuesday evening, Mayville softball squared off against conference rival Lomira at home in a closely contested game that ended in a 2–0 loss for the Cardinals.
Allie Schwirtz pitched a complete game for Mayville, allowing just three hits and striking out five without issuing a walk. Lomira did their damage early, plating two runs in the second inning, one of which came on a big home run off the bat of Taylor Bloom. That blast would prove to be the difference-maker in an otherwise tight defensive battle.
The Cardinals matched the Lions in hits, tallying three of their own, but couldn't string together the offense needed to break through. Morgan Manning, Addie Anderson, and Janel Youngbeck each recorded a hit, with Manning also stealing a base and adding a sacrifice. Madison Justman reached base after being hit by a pitch, and the Cardinals left seven runners stranded in the shutout.
Both teams played clean, fundamental softball, each committing only one error. Mayville’s defense held strong after the early damage, keeping Lomira off the board the rest of the way.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals showed grit against a tough conference opponent and will look to bounce back as conference play continues in the week.
