Thursday, March 27 - Mayville, Wisc.- The Mayville Cardinals opened their season on the road with a hard-fought 6-5 victory over Kettle Moraine Lutheran (KML) on Thursday, March 27, giving first-time Head Coach Ashley Krueger a strong first win.
“It felt awesome to come out victorious in that game and for that game to be my first win as a head coach,” exclaimed Krueger.
Mayville jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and added another run in the second. KML fought back, scoring four runs in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. However, the Cardinals rallied in the top of the seventh, plating two runs to reclaim the lead before shutting down KML in the final frame.
“We started out strong and then found ourselves behind in the top of the 6th inning, but we were able to come back in the 7th with smart base running.” Krueger continued, “The mindset of the team is to always work together to be successful and I think that really showed with our comeback win.”
Pitcher Alley Schwirtz led the way in the circle, throwing a complete game with 11 strikeouts while allowing just one earned run on seven hits.
“What impressed me the most with Allie’s pitching is that she pays attention to detail and she brought the intensity with every pitch,” said Krueger.
At the plate, Izzy McFadden (2-3, double) and Addie Anderson (2-4) led Mayville’s offense. Schwirtz helped her own cause with an RBI double, while Kate Aumann and Janel Youngbeck each drove in runs to contribute to the win.
Mayville finished the game with seven hits and took advantage of two stolen bases from Youngbeck and Lilly Mansueto to help spark their offense.
Krueger recapped, “When we find ourselves in a challenging position we have what it takes to overcome the challenge.”
The Cardinals (1-0) will look to keep their momentum going in their next matchups at home against Ripon on Tuesday, April 1, and on Friday, April 4, against Jefferson.
