Mayville Retains Milk Can, Powers Past Lomira Behind Baker’s Four Scores

Posted

It was a perfect fall evening for Flyway Conference football as Mayville (8-0, 7-0) and Lomira (6-2, 4-3) renewed their storied rivalry with the Milk Can on the line. With Senior Night and Parents Night setting an emotional tone, the Cardinals took the field through a banner held by parents, fully aware of the stakes, not just pride, but postseason momentum.

“The season really is a grind for the players and their families.  It's perfect when we can celebrate our seniors and our families in front of a packed crowd with the conference championship and a pride trophy on the line,” said Mayville Head Coach Scott Hilber.

From the opening whistle, Mayville set a physical tone on both sides of the ball. The Cardinals leaned on their identity, power football, and senior running back Landen Baker, who delivered a career night. Baker carried 19 times for 248 yards and four touchdowns, gashing Lomira’s defense.

“Mayville versus Lomira is always a fun battle and the boys on both teams didn't disappoint. I'm very pleased with the focus of our team this week and how we executed in the first half.” Hilber continued, “ The second half we sort of felt like we were just doing our best to not let Lomira take all the momentum, and fortunately we were able to hold on for the win, an outright conference championship and a presumed number-one seed in the playoffs.”

Mayville struck first late in the opening quarter, with Baker finishing a methodical drive from four yards out. Early in the second, he broke loose for an 87-yard sprint to the end zone, pushing the lead to 14-0. Lomira answered with a determined drive capped by Hunter Schaumberg’s seven-yard touchdown run, showcasing the Lions’ resilience.

“That was a great drive to help fuel the belief in ourselves and our abilities,” said Lomira Head Coach Bryan Gregory. “When we execute, we are capable of anything, but need to sustain on a more consistent basis.”

Mayville continued to pound the ball behind its offensive line, adding two more Baker touchdowns before halftime. Lomira’s special teams came up big with a blocked point after, in the second quarter, but the Cardinals held a 27-14 lead at the break.

Lomira quarterback Keegan Kell kept the Lions in contention, going 9-of-11 for 100 passing yards, finding Kolton Wagoner and Blake Steger for key gains. However, Mayville's defense held firm, especially against the run, limiting Lomira to just 94 rushing yards on 33 attempts. Kell led Lomira’s ground game with 59 yards, while Schaumberg added 32 and Elijah James chipped in 20 more.

One of the defining moments came in the fourth quarter. Lomira, trailing but driving, lined up for a fourth-and-goal inside the one-yard line. The Cardinals’ defensive front surged, stonewalling the attempt and preserving the two-score lead. With seven seconds left, the Cardinals took a knee, securing the Milk Can for another year and clenched first in the Flyway Conference.

“We showed flashes of playing the way we are capable of playing, and I was proud of how we battled by never giving up,” said Gregory. “We competed until the final whistle, and that is something we can build off of going into the playoffs.”

Mayville finished with 378 rushing yards, getting key contributions from Emerson Mittelstadt (72 yards) and Tanner Schneider (37 yards). The Cardinals did not attempt a pass, imposing their will at the line of scrimmage from start to finish.

Hilber reflected, “Now that our regular season goals are behind us, this is a great time for self-reflection and to figure out the state of the team. Whether undefeated or not, every team has weaknesses and we need to assess ours and figure out how we can make this team better in the playoffs. At the same time, this is not the time to reinvent ourselves.”

“We have to treat every week like it's our last one together, because that could easily become our reality if we don't. Chilton will get the best Mayville football has to offer. We'll see soon enough if that is enough for us to earn another game,” concluded Hilber.

With the regular season complete, both teams now turn to the WIAA postseason. Mayville has earned the No. 1 seed in Division 5 and will host No. 8 Chilton on Friday, October 24. Lomira, the No. 6 seed in Division 6, will go on the road to face No. 3 St. Mary’s Springs.
