Mayville Girls Win Pirate Invite; Boys Place Second in Third Meet of the Week

Posted

On Friday, May 9, the Mayville track and field team traveled to Waterloo for the Pirate Invitational, their third meet in just five days. Despite the tight schedule and some tired legs, the Cardinals rose to the occasion with strong performances across the board. The girls’ team claimed first place in the seven-team field, edging out Horicon by just three points with a final score of 151. The boys also had a great showing, finishing second overall with 163 points behind host Waterloo.

The girls were led by Lydia Case, who earned a win in the 300m hurdles (52.44) and tied for first in the pole vault at 8’6”. Aubrey Thom placed in four events, including fourth in the 100m dash and second in the 100m hurdles. Reagan Hardesty scored in both hurdle events and the triple jump. In the distance events, Sidney Davis was runner-up in the 1600m and anchored the winning 4x800m relay team (Davis, Samara Herzog, Destiny Giese, Mette Genz), which finished in 11:22.05. Herzog, Holly Brotcke, and Crystal Mueller also contributed points in the 800m. Other top scorers included Mackenzie Harris in the 400m and Kaia Harris in pole vault.

The boys had several standout performances as well. Chase Merritt won the 200m dash in 23.39 seconds and placed second in the 100m. He also helped the 4x100m relay team (with Braxton Wiese, Landon Baker, and Joren Schlender) win in 45.76. Schlender added a win in the triple jump (41’0.5”) and a second-place finish in the long jump (20’3”). Mac Livingston once again led the hurdles and high jump crew, winning both the 110m (16.32) and 300m hurdles (43.74), and placing first in the high jump (5’8”). Owen Bronecki finished second in the 400m and joined Xander Schowalter, Dominic Schuelke, and Landon Pestka to place third in the 4x400 and second in the 4x800 relay. Bennett Schellinger added key points in the shot put, finishing second with a throw of 40’8”.

“We had a lot of excellent performances,” said Coach Berry. “For this being our third meet in five days, the kids showed a lot of toughness and competed really well.”
