Late Push Falls Short at Kiel; Cardinals Drop First Conference Game at W.L.A.

Posted

The Mayville boys’ basketball team saw a late rally come up just short Tuesday night, falling 69–67 to Kiel in a hard-fought non-conference road matchup rescheduled from December 18.

Senior Talan Meyer carried the Cardinals offensively, pouring in 23 points on 9-of-19 shooting while adding nine rebounds, six assists, two steals, and two blocks in a strong all-around effort. Senior Tate Drinkwine followed with 13 points, knocking down three three-pointers, and junior Joe Promersberger added 12 points on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting night.

Mayville battled on the glass, finishing with 39 rebounds according to available stats, and created extra opportunities with 16 offensive rebounds. Defensively, the Cardinals recorded nine steals, six blocks, and took two charges, keeping the game within reach throughout.

The Cardinals moved the ball well, finishing with 20 assists, but struggled to convert consistently from the field, shooting 35 percent overall and 25 percent from three-point range. Free-throw shooting also played a role late, as Mayville went 9-of-15 at the line in the two-point loss.

Winnebago Lutheran Academy 70, Mayville 54

Mayville returned to Flyway Conference action Saturday night but was unable to slow Winnebago Lutheran Academy (7-4,3-2), falling 70-54 in its first conference loss of the season.

The Cardinals battled throughout but struggled to keep pace offensively as WLA built separation in the second half. The loss dropped Mayville to 7-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play, moving the Cardinals into second place in the Flyway Conference.

The Cardinals will have a chance to close the gap when they travel to Lomira (12-1, 6-0) on Thursday, Jan. 22, with a 7 p.m. tipoff scheduled in a key Flyway Conference matchup.
