Horicon Lions Club President John Schwartz presented a check for $3,131 to support Horicon High School students who will be embarking on a service trip to Guatemala in June. The funds were raised by the Horicon Lions Club through a meat raffle which was held on January 25. All of the proceeds raised from this Lions Club fundraiser were donated towards this service project.
“Horicon High School has paired with the group Hug it Forward to provide their students with an opportunity to attend a service trip this summer to Guatemala to help build schools. With a group of 17 students and five chaperones, our primary goal is to provide underserved communities with access to quality education by building sustainable structures that are both environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Guatemala does not have a waste management system like here in the United States. The building of these schools takes that in mind. The school’s walls will be made out of plastic water bottles that are filled with trash. In turn, our group aims to help clean the streets of Guatemala while also providing children with an opportunity to gain an education,” explained Diego Rodriguez, a Horicon High School senior. “In addition to improving educational infrastructure, the initiative offers an opportunity for cross-cultural exchange and deepens the bond between people from different backgrounds. We will work alongside local community members, fostering a sense of collaboration and shared purpose. It is not as if we are traveling down there unannounced; the community that we are visiting also plays an immense role in the creation of the schools since they themselves are the ones gathering all the garbage together.”
These high school students are also raising funds for their service trip to Guatemala with a cash raffle sponsored by the Horicon Marshmen Foundation. Tickets are $50 each, with prizes of $2,000 (1st), $1,000 (2nd), $500 (3rd), and $100 for places 4th-8th, plus $50 for 9th and 10th. Only 300 tickets will be sold, and the drawing will be at 12:30 p.m. on April 1, live on Facebook. All proceeds benefit student travel costs. Get your tickets from any student or chaperone going on the trip.
