The Mayville girls’ basketball team dropped a tough non-conference contest on Tuesday, Dec. 23, falling 69-46 to Columbus (6-2). The Cardinals (4-4) struggled to slow the visitors early, as Columbus built a 40-19 halftime advantage and maintained control through the second half.
Despite the early deficit, Mayville continued to compete and showed improved rhythm after the break, scoring 27 points in the second half. Freshman Ady Christian led the Cardinals with 19 points, knocking down three three-pointers and shooting 7-of-15 from the field. She also added three assists with just one turnover.
Senior Layla Budahn finished with nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds, including six offensive boards, while freshman Sophie Budahn added eight points and seven rebounds. Junior Chassia Geschke contributed six rebounds off the bench.
Shooting proved challenging for Mayville, as the Cardinals finished at 28% from the field and 20% from three, while also leaving points at the line, going 9-of-23 on free throws, while 22 turnovers made it difficult to cut into the margin.
Mayville (4-5,1-3) now looks ahead to a busy week, returning home on Monday, Jan. 5, to host Dodgeland (8-3), after print time. The Cardinals then travel to Kewaskum (7-3) on Tuesday, Jan. 6, before closing the week with a conference road game at St. Mary’s Springs (5-6, 2-2) on Friday, Jan. 9, with tip-off at 7 p.m.
