Cardinals Cross Country Battled Muddy Conditions at Ripon Invite
MAYVILLE CROSS COUNTRY
The Mayville cross country teams got a true taste of fall racing on Saturday, September 20, as they tackled a brand-new course in Ripon. Heavy rain on Friday night left the farm field layout wet and muddy, with showers on and off throughout race day, adding to the challenge. Despite the tough conditions, the Cardinals competed hard, with the girls finishing fourth as a team, just three points shy of a podium spot, and the boys taking eighth in a strong field.
The girls’ race saw Mayville score 110 points, behind Lomira (46) and Ripon (78). Leading the way for the Cardinals was Sidney Davis, who earned a 10th-place medal. Samara Herzog also medaled in 11th, with Mette Gentz crossing in 22nd for a medal finish, as well. Other strong varsity performances came from Crystall Mueller (28th), Bella Wege (38th), Lydia Case (40th), and Layla Budahn (55th). On the JV side, Makenzie Harris picked up a ninth-place medal, while Pearl Witek (14th) and Maggie Beavers (21st) also turned in solid races.
On the boys’ side, Mayville tallied 181 points to place eighth. Waupun led the pack with 40 points, followed by Campbellsport (57). Adam Boehnlein earned the team’s top varsity finish in 17th place, good for a medal. He was followed by Caden Lindgren (32nd), Mac Livingston (37th), Phoenix Ellingson (46th), Reid Schmidt (49th), Alex Richter (52nd), and Ian Meyrose (56th). On the JV squad, Lachlan Worthington placed 21st.
The middle school runners also got in on the medal action. Norah Billington earned a third-place finish, while Marcus Gentz (7th) and Eli Mageski (10th) joined her on the podium. Astraya Ellingson (63rd) and Adelia Jacobs (94th) rounded out the junior high group.
“Everybody ran well despite the conditions, and we were missing a few runners that would have helped our scores,” Head Coach Bob Berry noted. “Still, I’m proud of the way our kids competed on a true cross country course.”
The Cardinals will be back in action Thursday, September 25, at the Horicon River Run Invite, with the boys racing at 4 p.m., girls at 4:40 p.m., and middle school at 5:20 p.m.
