Cardinals Roll Past Horicon in Rivalry Matchup

Posted

After Thursday’s game at Omro was called off due to weather, Mayville softball came out fresh and firing Friday, May 2, cruising to a 10–0 nonconference win over area rival Horicon.

The Cardinals jumped ahead with a five-run second inning and never looked back, tallying 11 hits and playing error-free defense. Addie Anderson led the way with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, driving in three runs. Allie Schwirtz also stayed hot, collecting three hits, including two doubles and adding two RBIs of her own.

Izzy McFadden chipped in with a pair of hits and two runs scored, while Janel Youngbeck scored three times and added an RBI despite not recording a hit. Kate Aumann and Pearl Witek each added RBIs to round out a balanced offensive effort.

Schwirtz continued her dominance in the circle, striking out seven in four innings while allowing just one hit. Youngbeck closed out the game, giving up one hit in a clean final frame.

The win marks Mayville’s second shutout this week and a strong bounce-back following the canceled contest Thursday, bringing the team to (11-3,6-2) for the season.

The Cardinals head into a busy week taking it on the road Monday, May 5 at Winnebago Lutheran Academy and bringing it home Tuesday, May 6, playing Omro; Wednesday, May 8 playing North Fond du Lac on Senior Night; Thursday, May 9 taking on conference rival Oakfield. All games this week will begin at 5 p.m.

Cardinals Bounce Back with Road Win Over Campbellsport

Just one day after a tough road loss to Laconia, the Mayville Cardinals responded in a big way Tuesday night, edging Campbellsport 2–1 for their second conference win over the Cougars this season.

The Cardinals jumped out early, scoring both of their runs in the first inning and relying on dominant pitching and clean defense the rest of the way. Izzy McFadden led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a run scored to spark Mayville’s lineup. Janel Youngbeck also crossed the plate after reaching base on a hit-by-pitch.

Mayville recorded seven hits in total, with contributions from Kate Aumann, Pearl Witek, Morgan Manning, and Madison Justman. The team left six runners on base but played error-free in the field.

Allie Schwirtz was sharp in the circle, striking out 11 and allowing just four hits and one walk in the complete-game victory. Campbellsport’s only run came in the final frame, but the Cardinals held firm to close out the win.

The victory pushes Mayville to 6–2 in conference play and marks a steady rebound following Monday’s setback.

Cardinals Struggle on the Road Against Laconia

With storms looming in the forecast, Mayville softball traveled to Laconia for a Monday conference matchup that was cut short by a dominant Spartan performance. The Cardinals fell 15–0 in a game that ended early due to the run rule.

Mayville struggled to find momentum both at the plate and in the field. Offensively, the Cardinals managed just two hits—one each from Janel Youngbeck and Morgan Manning. Pearl Witek laid down a sacrifice, and Madison Justman drew a walk, but the Cardinals stranded four baserunners and were unable to bring any home.

Defensively, six errors proved costly, giving Laconia extra opportunities that the Spartans converted into runs. The Mayville pitching staff combined to allow 11 hits and 15 runs, though only a portion were earned. Allie Schwirtz and Janel Youngbeck split time in the circle.

The loss moved Mayville to 5–2 in conference play as they look to regroup with their next conference game on Tuesday, April 29 at Campbellsport.
