If the season-opening win on the road was about grit, Mayville’s first game under the lights at Ray Dunn Field was about firepower. The Cardinals stormed past area rival Horicon/Hustisford on Friday night, 62-0, leaning on a relentless ground attack and a defense that never let the visitors breathe.
Mayville’s run game once again defined the night. The Cardinals racked up 403 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 38 carries. Senior Landen Baker paced the team with 72 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Sophomore Tanner Schneider added 45 yards and a score, while Paxton Decker broke loose for 57 yards and another touchdown. Isaiah Gregor (49 yards), August Giese (37 yards, one touchdown), and Dominic Schuelke (40 yards) all chipped in big gains. Quarterback Emerson Mittelstadt ran for 41 yards and a touchdown, while also completing 3 of 4 passes for 21 yards and adding a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Mayville’s defense swarmed throughout the night, holding the Marshmen to just 13 total rushing yards on 24 attempts and 41 passing yards. Paxton Decker led with 6.5 tackles, while Landen Baker added 5.5. Owen Steger, Tate Drinkwine, and Owen Bronecki each contributed three stops up front. The Cardinals forced one interception, returned by Mittelstadt for a score, and never allowed Horicon/Hustisford to cross the goal line.
The performance reflected the brand of football Mayville has long been known for — controlling games with power runs behind a physical line and grinding through defensive fronts until opportunities break open. It’s a style every athlete in the program is learning to embrace.
After two straight wins, Mayville sits at 2-0 to open the season, with momentum building and the identity of Cardinal football on full display.
Mayville (2-0) travels to Winnebago Lutheran (0-2) on Friday, Sept. 5, with kick-off at 7 p.m.
Husticon Battles Through Adversity
Husticon’s night took a tough turn early when its starting quarterback left in the first half of the game, forcing the Marshmen to play behind a backup signal-caller the rest of the way. Sophomore AJ Kluck stepped in and finished with 30 passing yards, while senior Christian Schwartz led the ground game with 17 rushing yards. Freshman JR Adkins provided the team’s highlight with a 39-yard reception. Defensively, Kaleb Hodgson recorded 5.5 tackles and an interception to pace Husticon.
Husticon (0-2) will take it on the road Friday, Sept. 5, traveling to Lake Mills (2-0). Kick-off is at 7 p.m.
