Cardinals Navigate Busy Week, Fall to Kewaskum and Saint Mary’s Springs

Posted

The Mayville (4-6) girls’ basketball team put together a strong, spirited effort Monday, Jan. 5 but came up short in a 61–53 loss to Dodgeland (9-3) at Mayville High School.

The Cardinals opened the game with energy on and off the court, as a brief technical issue with the sound system delayed the National Anthem. During the pause, the Mayville student section broke into an a cappella version of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” drawing the entire gym into the moment and setting an electric tone for the night.

Mayville came out aggressive, sticking with its press throughout the first half and forcing Dodgeland to work for every possession. The physical style of play led to frequent trips to the free-throw line for both teams and a whistle-heavy game, with the Cardinals eventually seeing three players foul out by the final buzzer. The Dodgeland crowd was vocal at times, particularly during a first-half sequence involving confusion on a one-and-one situation, adding to the intensity of the contest.

Despite trailing 40–28 at halftime, Mayville responded with improved defensive discipline in the second half, tightening rotations and creating momentum with stops and steals. Senior Layla Budahn led the Cardinals with 14 points and eight rebounds, including five offensive boards. Freshman Ady Christian followed with 12 points on efficient shooting and added four assists, while freshman Sophie Budahn chipped in nine points and six rebounds.

The Cardinals pulled within striking distance midway through the half, but Dodgeland regained momentum late, scoring key baskets down the stretch to extend its lead and seal the win. Mayville finished the night shooting 42% from the field, outrebounding Dodgeland 30–27, and recorded 12 steals and three blocks, showing growth on the defensive end.

Kewaskum Pulls Away in Non-Conference Matchup

The Mayville girls’ basketball team (4-7) dropped a non-conference road contest Tuesday night, falling 56-37 to Kewaskum (8-3). The Cardinals battled early but struggled to find consistent offense against the Indians’ pressure.

Kewaskum opened the game with a strong first half, taking a 25-14 lead at the break. Mayville showed improved energy after halftime, scoring 23 points in the second half, but the Indians continued to control the pace and extended their lead to secure the win.

Freshman Ady Christian led the Cardinals with eight points while adding five rebounds, four assists, five steals, and a block. Seniors Madison Justman and Layla Budahn each scored six points, with Budahn also pulling down a team-high nine rebounds and recording three steals. Freshman Sophie Budahn contributed eight rebounds as Mayville worked to compete on the glass.

Defensively, the Cardinals were active with 11 steals and four blocks, but shooting woes proved costly as Mayville finished 12-of-56 from the field and 2-of-9 from three-point range. Kewaskum held an edge in rebounding and capitalized on turnovers to maintain control throughout the second half.

Friday Night at Springs

Mayville closed out a busy week on the road Friday, Jan. 9, falling 56-44 to Saint Mary’s Springs (7-6). The Cardinals stayed within striking distance throughout the contest but were unable to overcome a late push by the Ledgers. Despite the loss, Mayville showed continued growth and competitiveness as the young roster gained valuable experience against a quality opponent, finishing the week  4-8 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

Looking ahead, the Cardinals return home on Tuesday, Jan. 13, to host North Fond du Lac before hitting the road Saturday, Jan. 17, for a matchup at Winnebago Lutheran Academy with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
