Cardinals Handle NFDL on the Road Before Falling to Cedar Grove–Belgium at Home

Posted

The Mayville boys’ basketball team saw its home-floor momentum slowed Friday night, falling 56–44 to nonconference opponent Cedar Grove–Belgium.

The Cardinals trailed by just two at halftime, 25–23, after a physical first half that featured tight defense on both ends. Cedar Grove–Belgium pulled away in the second half, outscoring Mayville 31–21 as the Cardinals struggled to find consistency offensively.

Senior Talan Meyer led Mayville with 15 points, while also contributing four rebounds, six assists, and a block. Joe Promersberger added 11 points and made his presence felt defensively with three blocks, while Emerson Mittelstadt filled the stat sheet with six points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals, and a block.

Tate Drinkwine chipped in five points along with two steals, and Braxton Wiese added five points and a team-high six rebounds. Kevin Keller rounded out the scoring with two points and four rebounds.

Mayville finished with 13 assists, seven steals, and six blocks, but turnovers and limited trips to the free-throw line proved costly against a disciplined Cedar Grove–Belgium squad.

The Mayville boys’ basketball team picked up a solid road conference win on Tuesday night, defeating North Fond du Lac 74–65 to improve to 9–5 overall.

The Cardinals established control early and maintained their edge throughout the night, using efficient shooting and steady defensive pressure to keep the Orioles at bay. Mayville finished the game shooting 52 percent from the floor and forced 12 North Fond du Lac turnovers, turning defense into scoring opportunities.

Senior Talan Meyer led all scorers with 22 points on 11-of-18 shooting, while also pulling down eight rebounds and recording three steals. Braxton Wiese added 14 points, attacking the rim throughout the game, and Emerson Mittelstadt chipped in 11 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals. Joe Promersberger provided a strong presence on the glass with six rebounds, along with Meyer, Mittelstadt, Tate Drinkwine, and Owen Steger, who combined for 10 assists.

Despite struggles at the free-throw line, the Cardinals owned the glass with 26 defensive rebounds and 10 on the offensive end, making key stops down the stretch to lock up the conference victory.

With the win, Mayville continues to build momentum as conference play rolls on, improving its record to 9–5 heading into the next stretch of the season.

Mayville (9–6, 7–2) returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at home in conference play, taking on WLA. The Cardinals continue conference play at home on Thursday, Feb. 12, in a matchup against Laconia (12–3, 5-4), with tipoff set for 7 p.m. Mayville hosts Oakfield for nonconference play on Saturday, Feb. 14, with tip-off at 2:30 p.m.
