Rain showers came and went Friday night in a big conference match-up at Ray Dunn Field against Campbellsport, but nothing could slow down the Mayville Cardinals as they blanked the Cougars 24-0 to remain unbeaten on the season.
The game opened as a defensive battle, with both teams trading three-and-outs and neither side able to move the ball in a scoreless first quarter.
Mayville finally broke through in the second quarter. Landen Baker capped a steady drive with a one-yard touchdown run at the 8:45 mark, and quarterback Emerson Mittelstadt followed with a 30-yard scoring dash down the sideline just before halftime to give the Cardinals a 14-0 lead.
After the break, kicker Owen Mlsna drilled a 24-yard field goal to extend the advantage. In the fourth quarter, as the rain picked up, Mayville delivered the knockout punch. Facing fourth down, near the middle of the field, Mittelstadt connected with Joe Promersberger on a 35-yard touchdown pass to seal the 24-0 win.
The Cardinals controlled the line of scrimmage all night, rushing for 295 yards on 53 carries. Baker led the way with 122 yards on 20 attempts, while Schneider and Promersberger each added 56. Mittelstadt chipped in 46 rushing yards and accounted for two touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground.
Defensively, Mayville stifled the Cougars from the opening kickoff, holding them to just 39 total yards, including one yard passing. Campbellsport managed only six first downs and never crossed midfield in the second half.
With the win, Mayville improves to (5-0, 3-0) heading into next week’s conference matchup.
The Cardinals take it on the road to St. Mary’s Springs (3-2, 2-1) on Friday, Sept. 26, with kick off at 7 p.m.
