Cardinals Finish Second in Flyway, Sweep Home Tournament

Posted

A standing-room-only crowd packed the Mayville Jr./Sr. High School gymnasium Thursday, Oct. 8, as the Cardinals hosted Laconia in a winner-take-all Flyway Conference volleyball championship showdown during Mayville’s homecoming week.

Despite an aggressive effort from the Lady Cardinals, Laconia claimed the conference title with a 3-0 sweep, winning 25-21, 25-15 and 25-15. Mayville finished second in the Flyway Conference with a 5-1 conference record.

The atmosphere was electric, with both student sections filling the gym with cheers throughout the highly anticipated matchup. Mayville students, many painted in Cardinal red, joined mascot Big Red in rallying behind their team.

Mayville battled throughout a competitive opening set, keeping the Spartans within reach before falling 25-21. Laconia carried that momentum into the next two sets, holding off the Cardinals to complete the sweep.

Emotions ran high during the match, including a disputed call on a Mayville pancake save that awarded Laconia a point and drew a loud reaction from the home crowd.

Although the Cardinals came up short of the conference championship, the evening’s homecoming festivities continued with the return of Mayville’s traditional bonfire following the match. Students and spectators gathered to watch a Spartan ship constructed from wooden pallets go up in flames. The Mayville Fire Department ignited and supervised the bonfire, bringing back a homecoming tradition.

Cardinals Bounce Back at Home Tournament

Mayville returned to its home court Saturday, Oct. 10, hosting a tournament and sweeping all four of its matches.

The Cardinals opened with a 2-0 victory over Columbus before defeating Sturgeon Bay and Wautoma by identical 2-0 scores.

Mayville faced Sturgeon Bay a second time, again earning a straight-set victory, 25-15, 25-23, to complete an undefeated tournament performance.

The four victories provided a strong finish to homecoming week for the Cardinals, who improved to 24-7 overall after finishing second in the Flyway Conference with a 5-1 record.

The Lady Cards take to the court on Thursday, Oct. 15, traveling to St. Mary’s Springs (14-18, 4-2), with a 7 p.m. start.
