The Mayville Cardinals overpowered North Fond du Lac 63-8 Friday night in a conference rout that showcased big plays, depth, and community spirit at Ray Dunn Field.
Before the game, the Cardinals hosted its annual tailgate, where families gathered for face painting, a bounce house, balloon animals, and plenty of food. The festive atmosphere carried into kickoff as the Cardinals jumped out to a 28-0 first-quarter lead behind long touchdown runs from Joe Promersberger (36 yards), Tanner Schneider (47 and 9 yards), and Landen Baker (four yards), with all four extra points kicked, good from Owen Mlsna.
Promersberger added a 39-yard score early in the second quarter before the Orioles got on the board with an 82-yard kickoff return. Promersberger immediately answered with an 85-yard touchdown return, and Mayville continued to pull away with rushing scores from Kevin Keller (27 yards) and Baker (10 yards) to take a 56-8 lead at halftime.
It was also Mayville Youth Night, with youth football players recognized at halftime and running through a tunnel of varsity Cardinals as the home crowd cheered.
The second half was played under a running clock, with Mayville’s second-string lineup seeing extensive action. The lone score came late in the fourth quarter when Cooper Raddemann intercepted a pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown, sealing the 63-8 final.
Mayville piled up 331 rushing yards on 31 carries, averaging 10.7 yards per carry. Promersberger (75 yards, 2 TD), Schneider (56 yards, 2 TD), Baker (54 yards, 2 TD), and Keller (64 yards, 1 TD) led the ground attack. The Cardinals' defense held the Orioles to just nine rushing yards and 17 passing yards, forcing an interception and recording one sack by Tate Drinkwine.
The win moves Mayville to 4-0 on the season.
Mayville goes on to host Campbellsport (1-3) in conference play on Friday, Sept. 19, at Ray Dunn Field, with kickoff at 7 p.m.
