Posted

On Saturday, August 30, the Mayville Cross Country team opened its season at the Jamie Block Invite in West Bend. The Cardinals put together their best showing at this meet in many years.

Both the varsity and JV girls’ teams placed sixth out of 15 schools, while the boys’ varsity team finished 12th. Team scoring is determined by the combined times of the top five runners.

In the varsity girls’ race, Neenah took first with a time of 1:40:38, followed by Plymouth (1:53:43), Sun Prairie West (1:55:19), Fond du Lac (1:58:16), Franklin (1:58:45), and Mayville in sixth with 1:59:39. West Bend East (2:00:16), Oshkosh North (2:02:03), Beaver Dam (2:02:55), and West Bend West (2:16:01) rounded out the top ten. Three schools did not field complete teams.

Mayville runners also earned five individual medals, awarded to the top 15 finishers in each grade level race. Adam Boehnlein placed 10th in the sophomore race. Samara Herzog finished 7th in the 10th-grade girls’ race, while Sidney Davis was 10th in the 11th-grade race, Mette Genz 11th in the 11th-grade race, and Bella Wege 11th in the 9th-grade race. Each of those races featured more than 60 competitors.

The Cardinals also had strong performances in the open races. Marcus Genz finished second, Eli Mageski fifth, Keller Knutson sixth, and Cody Lingren 13th. On the girls’ side, Nora Billington won her race.

Mayville will compete again on Thursday, September 4, when Horicon and Mayville co-host the Dodge County Meet at River Bend Park. The girls’ race begins at 4:15 p.m., followed by the boys’ at 4:50 p.m., with junior high races to follow.
