The Mayville Cardinals softball continued to face a tough stretch of conference and non-conference play, dropping four games during the week of April 27–May 1.
Mayville opened the week with a 15-5 loss on the road at Omro High School softball. The Cardinals showed offensive life early, plating three runs in the third inning and adding two more in the fifth, finishing with six hits. However, a 13-run fifth inning by Omro proved to be the difference.
On Tuesday, Mayville was held to just two hits in a 10-0 loss at Lomira High School softball, as the Lions used a steady offense to build their lead.
Back home Thursday, the Cardinals jumped out early against St. Mary's Springs softball, scoring five runs over the first two innings. Springs responded with a big offensive night, pulling away for a 23-5 win.
Mayville wrapped up the week on Friday with a 19-4 loss at Lakeside Lutheran High School softball. The Cardinals pushed across four runs in the opening inning but were unable to maintain momentum as Lakeside Lutheran answered with 11 runs in the first and continued to add on.
Despite the results, head coach Ashley Krueger emphasized the team’s resilience and growth during a rebuilding season.
“One thing we emphasize as a team is always finding a positive in every game,” Krueger said. “We make sure to encourage the girls to keep putting in 100% effort and to have positive attitudes no matter what happens. Our team has created a bond that has allowed us to come together when facing challenging situations and work towards improving every day.”
With a young roster continuing to gain experience, the Cardinals remain focused on development and building momentum as the season progresses.
Looking to next week, the Cardinals (0-11, 0-7) will host Campbellsport (13-3,7-1) on Monday, May 4, and WLA (7-6,5-3), Friday, May 8, for conference play, first pitch 5 p.m.
