Perfect football weather greeted the Mayville community Friday night as the Cardinals (6-0, 4-0) hosted conference rival Omro (3-3, 3-3) for Homecoming, and the hometown team didn’t disappoint, rolling to a 42-0 victory in front of a packed stadium.
The night began with drama as players burst through a cloud of smoke lit off by the coaching staff during introductions. The smell of sulfur lingered at kickoff, setting the stage for a lively night under the lights.
Mayville struck quickly, with Landen Baker breaking free for a 12-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. Just minutes later, Tanner Schneider sprinted 43 yards for another score, and Joe Promersberger followed with a 75-yard dash down the sideline to make it 21-0 by the end of the first.
“Our offense did a great job controlling the line and the clock,” said Head Coach Scott Hilber. “That helps our defense because the other team can’t score if they don't have the ball, and if they don't have the ball long enough to gain any kind of rhythm or momentum, it makes it even more difficult for them to score.”
“Defensively, our guys are playing within the system and doing their jobs so the whole machine works. Most of these players have earned this success through hard work in the offseason,” stated Hilber.
Before halftime, Kevin Keller punched in a 13-yard score, and quarterback Emerson Mittelstadt added a two-yard touchdown run after Owen Steger registered a sack to stall Omro’s offense. By the break, Mayville led 35-0.
The halftime show featured the 50-member Mayville marching band taking the field immediately after the Homecoming court was announced, drawing cheers from both students and families.
Schneider wasn’t done, stiff-arming his way to a 30-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to close out the scoring. With a running clock the entire second half, Mayville rotated in its JV squad, giving younger players valuable time on the field and once again building depth off the bench.
Schneider led all rushers with 110 yards on just eight carries and two touchdowns. Promersberger added 99 yards and a score, while Baker (97 yards), Keller (52 yards), and Mittelstadt (24 yards) each found the end zone. The Cardinals racked up 409 rushing yards on 37 carries, averaging over 11 yards per attempt, while holding Omro to just 82 total yards.
With the win, Mayville moves to 7-0 on the season, 5-0 in conference, and continues to look every bit the powerhouse in their league after back to back to back shut-outs, the Cardinal’s work to stay sharp and focused.
Coach Hilber noted, “Our goal every week is to prepare as hard as we can for our opponent, but to also make sure we complete our own self-assessments so we are a better team this week than we were the week prior. There are always opportunities to grow and get better.”
The Cardinals travel to Laconia (2-4,2-3) for conference play on Friday, Oct. 10, with kickoff at 7 p.m.
