The No. 10-seeded Mayville Cardinals baseball team kept its season alive in impressive fashion Thursday, May 28, rolling to a 10-0 shutout victory over No.7 seed New Holstein in a WIAA Division 3 regional matchup.
Mayville wasted little time taking control, scoring two runs in the opening inning before steadily adding to the lead throughout the afternoon. The Cardinals plated a run in the fourth, erupted for four runs in the fifth, added another in the sixth, and capped the scoring with two runs in the seventh.
The Cardinals pounded out 14 hits and received contributions throughout the lineup. Senior Brady Zitlow set the tone at the top of the order, going 2-for-5 while scoring three runs and stealing a base. Kevin Keller delivered one of the biggest offensive performances of the day, finishing 2-for-4 with two triples, an RBI, and two runs scored.
Weston Teeters contributed a double and two RBIs, while Tanner Schneider added two hits and an RBI. Joe Promersberger collected two hits, including a double, and drove in a run. Cooper Raddemann and Tyler Loos each added two-hit performances as the Cardinals consistently pressured the Huskies' defense, which committed five errors.
Teeters was equally dominant on the mound. The junior scattered seven hits over seven shutout innings, striking out seven while allowing just two walks. New Holstein put runners on base throughout the game, but Mayville repeatedly came up with key outs to preserve the shutout.
The victory sends the No. 10-seeded Cardinals into the next round of the WIAA Division 3 tournament. Mayville will face No. 2 seed Random Lake on Tuesday, June 2 (after print time), with a trip deeper into the postseason on the line.
