Cardinals Baseball Battles Through Tough Week Against Winnebago Lutheran Academy

Posted

The Mayville Cardinals (6-9, 3-6) faced a difficult week against a strong Winnebago Lutheran (11-7, 6-4) squad, dropping both matchups despite several standout offensive performances.

Tuesday, May 12, on Senior Night at Fireman’s Field, Winnebago Lutheran Academy pulled away for a 15-4 victory after using big innings in the fifth and sixth to break open the game. Mayville stayed within striking distance early after scoring twice in the first inning, but the Vikings steadily added runs throughout the night.

Before the game, the Cardinals recognized seniors Brady Zitlow and Cole Runte during Senior Night festivities. The two seniors gathered on the field with teammates and coaches as the program celebrated their contributions to Mayville baseball.

Zitlow also led the Cardinals offensively, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Paxton Decker added an RBI, while Mayville collected six hits in the contest.

The teams met again on Thursday in a back-and-forth battle that turned into one of Mayville’s highest-scoring games of the season. The Cardinals built leads multiple times and carried an 11-6 advantage into the final inning before Winnebago Lutheran rallied for six runs in the seventh to escape with a 12-11 win.

Mayville’s offense produced throughout the lineup, finishing with 10 hits and drawing 12 walks. Tanner Schneider powered the Cardinals with a home run and three RBIs while scoring three times. Paxton Decker added a 3-for-5 night with two RBIs.

Weston Teeters turned in a strong effort on the mound for much of the game, striking out seven over 5 2/3 innings before the late comeback shifted momentum.

The Cardinals have a busy week of conference play starting out hosting Campbellsport (11-10,5-6) on Monday, May 18. Mayville travels to St. Mary’s Springs (13-5, 9-3) on Tuesday, May 19, at 5 p.m., and then will host Springs on Thursday, May 21, with first pitch at 4 p.m. The Cardinals finish the week at Living Word (15-3) on Friday, May 22, 4:30 p.m.
