Big Second Half Fuels Cardinals’ 14-point Win on Hall of Fame Night

Posted

Mayville turned a tight first half into a statement second-half performance Friday night, pulling away from Saint Mary’s Springs for a 71-57 victory in front of a packed home crowd.

The Cardinals improved to 12-8 overall, using a big closing stretch after halftime to separate from the Ledgers (7-15, 4-9). The first half was a back-and-forth battle, with neither team able to create much breathing room. Mayville carried a slim 33-32 lead into the break.

At halftime, the focus shifted briefly from the court to celebration as Mayville inducted four alumni into its Athletic Hall of Fame. The ceremony, held in front of a gym full of fans, added to the electric atmosphere.

The Cardinals responded with one of their strongest second halves of the season.

Mayville outscored Saint Mary’s Springs 38-25 after the break, tightening up defensively and pushing the pace in transition. The Cardinals built the lead into double digits midway through the second half and extended it to as many as 20 points before closing out the 14-point win.

The balanced offensive attack and defensive pressure proved decisive as Mayville controlled the glass and limited scoring runs down the stretch. The victory marks Mayville’s second straight win and its second win over the Ledgers for the season.

With momentum building late in the regular season, the Cardinals now turn their attention to carrying that second-half intensity into the final stretch.

Meyer Scores 18 as Cardinals Grind Out Key Conference Road Win Over Campbellsport

Mayville bounced back in conference play Tuesday, Feb. 17, grinding out a 56-51 road win over Campbellsport to improve to 11-8 overall.

The Cardinals leaned on senior leadership in a tightly contested matchup that featured a close back-and-forth first half and plenty of second-half pressure. Senior Talan Meyer set the tone offensively, pouring in 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. He added seven rebounds and four assists in an all-around performance.

Tate Drinkwine provided a strong inside presence with 14 points and seven rebounds, including three on the offensive glass, while Braxton Wiese added 10 points and knocked down 4-of-5 free throws. Emerson Mittelstadt chipped in six rebounds, two steals, and a block as Mayville’s defense came up with key stops late.

As a team, the Cardinals shot 45.7 percent from the field (21-of-46) and held Campbellsport to 34.6 percent shooting. Mayville also owned a 35-30 rebounding edge and recorded four blocks and nine steals. Despite 22 turnovers and a 9-of-17 night at the free-throw line, the Cardinals did enough down the stretch to seal the five-point victory.

Mayville (12–8, 10–3) returns to a busy week at home on Monday, Feb. 23,  nonconference play taking on Horicon (16-6). The Cardinals continue conference play on Thursday, Feb. 26, in a matchup against Lomira to round out regular season play (21-1,13-0), with tipoff set for 7 p.m. on Senior and Parents Night.
