Dodge County is set to witness a one-of-a-kind high school volleyball event this August: “The Battle of the Marsh,” an unprecedented outdoor varsity volleyball triple-header, will take place Tuesday, August 26, on the Mayville High School Ray Dunn football field, turning tradition on its head and paying tribute to the pioneers of the past.
For the first time in state history, a varsity volleyball match will be played outdoors on a custom-built Sport Court surface. The court will sit atop a plywood base, transforming the Mayville gridiron into a volleyball arena unlike any other in Wisconsin.
“This has been 10 months in the making,” said Alan Capps, Mayville varsity head coach and event organizer. “The pure scale of this is something I had not anticipated. It would be impossible to do this without literally hundreds of volunteers!”
The triple-header showdown includes these regional matchups:
The event is more than a high-energy night of volleyball; it’s also a moment to honor the trailblazing women who formed Mayville High School’s first girls' varsity volleyball team in the early 1970s. Members of that inaugural team and their coaches will be recognized during a special on-court ceremony between matches.
Many of those early athletes, including alumni from the very first team, will attend the event, reconnecting with teammates and witnessing the evolution of the sport they helped launch at Mayville High School.
“We’re proud to honor the women who laid the foundation for what girls’ high school sports would become,” said Capps. “Bringing this full circle, from playing in a small gym five decades ago to now, under the lights in front of a crowd, is something truly special.”
The Battle of the Marsh promises to be a night of historic firsts, fierce rivalries, and heartfelt recognition, celebrating the legacy of girls’ athletics while inspiring the next generation.
