Hello friends and residents of Mayville,
This month, we are starting off with a few new faces on the City Council. I want to welcome Mary Winter to the council representing Ward 4, and after May 11, we will also have a new alderman for Ward 5, Jason Buskie. Together, we will continue working to help Mayville grow and thrive for all our citizens.
This month, I met with the superintendent of the Mayville School District to discuss what support is needed from both the city and the School District. We also talked about potential joint initiatives that could benefit both the schools and the community. During our discussion, I learned that enrollment in the Mayville School District has been decreasing due to school choice and voucher programs. Last year, the district had to return more than $1 million to the State of Wisconsin because of this. This raises important questions about why students are leaving and what the future holds for our school system. When comparing state standards for public schools versus private school systems, one must wonder what the long-term impact will be on our community. I encourage residents to educate themselves on this issue, as it will affect Mayville’s future.
I continue to meet with developers and business leaders interested in investing in our city. We have discussed locations and incentives that the city may be able to offer. The North Industrial Park is approximately 50% complete, which will provide shovel-ready sites for future development projects without delays related to moving soil. All three of our street projects are moving forward, although we are addressing a few minor storm sewer issues. These projects are expected to be completed by the end of the summer. In addition, the new sewer plant upgrade is nearing 50% completion and remains on track with the project budget.
