Mayville Common Council Meeting: May

Posted

The Mayville Common Council turned to a coin toss to fill a vacant alderman seat, breaking a deadlock between two highly qualified candidates during their latest meeting on May 11.
Jason Buske, a former Juneau city council president with 12 years of experience, won the Ward 5 seat after correctly calling tails. Following the coin flip, Buske was immediately sworn in and took his seat on the council.
In other major business, the council unanimously approved a resolution to apply for a Dodge County Community Development Fund grant to demolish the former meat market on South Main St. and redevelop the property into a community park. The city, which has already purchased the site, plans to provide a 50% match for the project.
In an effort to boost regional cooperation, the council approved a summer recreational reciprocity agreement with the city of Horicon. Under the arrangement, Mayville residents will receive reduced resident rates at the Horicon community pool. In exchange, Horicon residents can receive a discount on new six-month or yearly memberships to Mayville’s Tag Center if they sign up before Labor Day.
The council also passed several internal policy changes, including:
-Approving a policy that allows library staff to be paid for up to three emergency closures per year. The measure passed 4-1, with newly appointed Alderman Busky casting the lone dissenting vote.
-Updating the city’s employee handbook to give new hires vacation accrual credit for relevant experience with their previous employer. The credit will be calculated on a two-to-one basis and requires the mayor’s final approval.
