On January 31, Lomira girls basketball beat NFDL 49-48 on the road in a game that went down to the final possession.
Lomira (13-7, 6-4) had a fast start when Savanna Frea converted an offensive rebound into two points to give the Lions a 9-3 lead over NFDL (7-9, 3-6).
FDL tied the game at 12 before Katie Kretschmer made a three-pointer for the Lions to give them a 15-12 lead with 7:30 on the first-half clock.
The Orioles scored six consecutive points before Kretschmer scored five more points, including a three, to give Lomira the lead back at 22-18, but NFDL scored the final four points of the half to tie the game at 22 going into the halftime break.
Kennedy Goebel hit a three-pointer to start the second half to give the Lions a 25-22 lead before NFDL closed the gap to 27-26. Josie Christian made her presence known by scoring eight points for Lomira, including two free throws, after NFDL Head Coach Gary Kuehl got a technical foul, to help the Lions push
out their lead to 35-26.
NFDL tried to get back into the game but Kretschmer showed poise, fitting of a senior, by scoring two baskets off of assists from fellow senior S. Frea for a 39-32 Lions’ lead with 7:30 on the second-half clock.
J. Christian hit a three-pointer after the Orioles had scored five straight points to put the Lions back ahead by five points with the score sitting at 42-37.
The Orioles got within three points when Goebel hit a jumper in the lane to make the score 44-40 in favor of the Lions.
Kretschmer’s big night continued by making two key free throws to give the Lions a 47-43 lead over NFDL.
NFDL scored the next five points in the game to take a late 48-47 lead with a little over one minute to play in the game.
The Orioles missed three important free throws in the last minute of the game which could have iced the game for them but their missed free throws kept the door open for Lomia and their star freshmen J. Christian.
When you give a good player like J. Christian the opportunity to win the game, you usually get positive results, which happened when J. Christian rose up on the left side of the court with 16 seconds left in the game, with her feet just inside the three-point line, and she calmly shot the ball into the net for two
points giving Lomira the lead back at 49-48.
NFDL got a good shot at the basket from about eight feet away from the hoop but their potential game- winning shot hit the rim twice before rolling off the basket which the Lions grabbed for the defensive rebound and the 49-48 conference victory.
Josie Christian’s 16 points and Katie Kretschmer’s 14 points gave the Lions the scoring they needed for the win.
