Lomira Girls Basketball Tames the Cardinals

On February 20, Lomira girls basketball beat Mayville 55-31 on senior night for Katie Kretschmer, Savanna Frea, and Bre Landowski.
Mayville (5-19, 1-13) held a 4-2 lead over Lomira (16-8, 9-5) after Layla Budahn scored on a nice up-and-under move for the Cardinals.
The Lions went on a 7-0 scoring run, highlighted by a Josie Christian three-point make for Lomira, after a basket for the Cardinals from Lydia Case to give the Lions a 13-6 lead.
The Cardinals got a basket from Molly Grulke to close the gap to 15-12 before Lomira scored the final five points of the first half to take a 20-12 lead at the halftime break.

Lomira took a 29-16 second-half lead, featuring a Katie Kretschmer three-pointer for the Lions.
Ellie Wojahn scored two points on an offensive rebound to close the gap on the scoreboard to 29-19 in favor of the Lions.
The Lions scored nine consecutive points to extend their lead to 38-19 before Budahn scored a basket in the paint to put the score at 38-21 in favor of Lomira.
Lomira’s J. Christian knocked out a three-pointer to push the Lions’ lead out to 43-22 in the second half.
The two teams traded points down the stretch with Lomira securing the 55-31 conference victory to end the regular season for both teams.
Layla Budahn led the Cardinals with 11 points in the contest.
Savanna Frea paced the Lions with 14 points, with Josie Christian adding 12 points, to guide Lomira to the win in their regular season finale.
Savanna Frea became Lomira’s all-time career leader in rebounds during the game, with 719 career rebounds and counting.
The fourth-seeded Lions received a bye in the first round of the Division 4 WIAA Girls Basketball Tournament, and they will host the winner of Markesan/Waterloo on February 28 at 7 p.m. in the second round of the tournament.
The ninth-seeded Cardinals traveled to play eighth-seeded WLA in the first round of the Division 3 WIAA Girls Basketball Tournament on February 25 at 7 p.m.
