On February 11, Lomira boys basketball lost 54-52 to Marshall in a matchup between two teams playing for future tournament sectional seeding potential.
Lomira (14-6) held a 9-4 lead over Marshall (15-4) after Hunter Duley and Keegan Kell made back-to-back three-pointers for the Lions.
Marshall had a 28-23 lead over the Lions before Kell drained another three-pointer for Lomira to make the score 28-26.
The Cardinals scored the final two points of the half to take a 30-26 lead at halftime.
Marshall extended their second-half lead to 39-30, but the Lions went on a 15-8 run, capped off by a Duley three-pointer, to bring Lomira within two points at 47-45.
Lomira was able to continue to put the pressure on the visiting Cardinals when Charlie Cole knocked down a three-pointer to put the score at 50-48 in favor of Marshall with 2:44 showing on the game clock.
The Lions had the ball down by one point with the score at 53-52 on the final possession when Lomira had an opportunity to win the game, but it wasn’t meant to be when a shot right at the rim didn’t go in for the Lions.
Marshall gathered the defensive rebound and made one free throw to earn a hard-fought 54-52 road victory, which will be a factor in the upcoming tournament seeding on Feb. 23 in Division 4.
“Marshall is a top-tier team in our sectional with very athletic and skilled players,” said Head Coach Dan Domask.
Lomira was led by Jackson Goebel’s 15 points and Hunter Duley’s 13 points in the non-conference matchup.
At LaconiaOn February 13, Lomira boys basketball lost 59-57 to Laconia in a game of scoring runs between the Flyway title contenders.
Laconia (17-3, 8-3) jumped out to an early 9-0 lead over visiting Lomira (14-6, 8-3) before the Lions got back-to-back three-pointers from guards Keegan Kell and Charlie Cole to close the gap to 9-6.
Dalton Zingsheim scored five straight points to tie the game at 11 before Laconia was able to increase their lead back to 17-13.
The Lions got two consecutive slashing baskets from Blake Steger to bring Lomira within two points at 19-17 in favor of the Spartans.
Lomira’s defense took a Laconia basket off the scoreboard when Sam Schraufnagel stepped up to take a charge with 45 seconds left on the first-half clock.
Cole knocked down a three-pointer in the corner from a good pass ahead by Steger to tie the game at 24 before the teams went into their respective locker rooms.
Laconia scored the first point of the second half before Lomira went on an impressive 12-0 scoring run, highlighted by their defense and three-point shooting, led by Kell making two in a row, to give the Lions a 36-25 lead over the Spartans.
The Lions’ hot shooting was done when Cole and Kell went back-to-back for the second time in the game with three-point makes to further extend their lead to 42-27.
Lomira was able to push their lead out further after Hunter Duley made a three-pointer for the Lions to put their lead at 47-31 with just over eight minutes left in the game.
The Spartans started to crawl back into the game with five straight points before Zingsheim scored a big basket for Lomira to put the score at 49-36.
The Lions got another Kell three-pointer with five minutes left on the second-half clock to give Lomira a 52-43.
Laconia scored 12 straight points to take a 55-52 lead over the Lions with 1:55 left in the game.
Lomira got two made free throws from Schraufnagel to close the gap to one point, with the Spartans leading 55-54 over the Lions.
The Spartans made four straight free throws to have a 59-54 lead with 24 seconds left in the game.
The Lions got a much-needed boost when Kell made his sixth three-pointer of the game with only 18 seconds showing on the game clock to make the score 59-57 in favor of Laconia.
Lomira put on full-court pressure, which resulted in senior guard Jackson Goebel getting a steal with 15 seconds left in the conference matchup.
The Lions moved the ball around in their final offensive possession, trying to find the best opportunity for their final shot at tying or winning the game.
Goebel drove to the hoop looking to tie the game for Lomira in the final seconds of the conference matchup when he rose for a runner in the lane, but the shot rolled off the rim, and the ball fell to the floor with the teams scrambling for possession in the final second of the game resulting in the game clock expiring with Laconia winning the back-and-forth contest by the score of 59-57.
Keegan Kell’s hot shooting streak continued for the Lions, leading them with 18 points in the conference title contender matchup.
At BerlinOn February 14, Lomira lost 59-47 to Berlin in their non-conference matchup.
Lomira (14-6) trailed 10-8 to Berlin (13-7) after Jackson Goebel hit a three-pointer for the Lions.
Berlin scored six straight points before Goebel scored eight consecutive points, including two more three-pointers for Lomira, to tie the game at 16.
The Lions took a 20-19 lead when Dalton Zingsehim found Charlie Cole for a fastbreak layup, which was followed up by Berlin scoring the final five points of the first half to take a 24-20 halftime lead.
The Indians scored the first 12 points of the second half to extend their lead to 36-20 over Lomira.
Sam Schraufnagel stepped into a three-point shot to cut into the Berlin lead at 41-27.
Lomira continued to battle in the game, getting the score to 44-34 at the six-minute mark after a Cole three-pointer and strong drive by Zingsheim.
The Lions had one final push to get back into the game when Cole knocked down back-to-back threes to close the gap to 50-42 in favor of Berlin.
Berlin finished the final three minutes of the game in their 59-47 non-conference win over the Lions.
Jackson Goebel scored a team-high 19 points for Lomira, which was followed by Charlie Cole’s 14 points.
Lomira hosted Springs on February 18 and hosts WLA on February 21, with Flyway Conference Championship implications on the line. Game times are scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Lions will be honoring some of their program history with a reunion for the Lomira boys 2000 state basketball team on February 21.
