Lomira Boys Basketball Beats Omro for their 10th Win of the Year
On January 24, Lomira boys basketball beat Omro 60-57 in a close matchup between the conference foes.
Lomira (10-3, 5-2) was down 6-5 early to visiting Omro (7-5, 3-4) in an important game in the Flyway Conference race.
Omro was able to extend their first-half lead to 26-19 by making four three-point shots with the last one coming right before the halftime buzzer.
The Lions were able to fight back in the second half to take the lead which was keyed by a 26-3 scoring stretch of play for Lomira, highlighted by their defense and making seven three pointers from four different players. Charlie Cole hit four of his three-point shots for the Lions.
Lomira held a 58-49 lead over the Foxes with under four minutes to play in the basketball game before Omro went on an 8-0 scoring run to put the score at 58-57 with one minute to play.
The Lions defense proved to be the difference in the final minute when Sam Schraufnagel got a steal with 42 seconds left in the game, and then their defense caused an Omro travel with 17.3 seconds on the game clock.
Cole was able to make two of four late free throws to give Lomira a 60-57 cushion with 11.5 seconds showing on the second-half clock.
Lomira used a smart strategy of taking two fouls on the defensive end since Omro wasn’t in bonus, and their late tactics took almost 10 important seconds off the clock.
Omro was able to get off a deep three-point shot from the left wing as the clock expired but the attempted prayer didn’t hit the rim giving the Lions a much-needed, 60-57 conference win at home.
“It was a game of full momentum swings with us being down by 15 points and being up by 11 points with the game going to the last possession,” said Head Coach Dan Domask.
Charlie Cole scored a career-high 20 points for the Lions and Jackson Goebel contributed 11 points to get the win.
Lomira boys basketball traveled to Mayville on January 28 at 7 p.m.
