The Mayville volleyball team continued its strong start to the season, picking up five wins this week, including a Flyway Conference sweep of Winnebago Lutheran Academy and an undefeated showing Saturday at the Fall River tournament, where Leah Vossekuil reached a career milestone.
Mayville hosted Winnebago Lutheran Academy on Thursday, Sept. 17, in front of a packed gym for Youth Night, and battled through two closely contested sets before pulling away in the third to complete a 3-0 conference sweep.
The Cardinals edged the Vikings 25-23 in the opening set and followed with a 25-21 victory in the second. Mayville took control in the third, closing out the match with a 25-16 win.
Leah Vossekuil led the Cardinals' attack with 14 kills while hitting .429 on the night. Amelia Boeder added seven kills and made her presence felt at the net with five total blocks.
The victory kept Mayville unbeaten in Flyway Conference play.
The Cardinals returned to the court Saturday, Sept. 19, traveling to Fall River for tournament action and coming away with four straight wins.
A highlight of the day came when Vossekuil recorded her 500th career kill. The Cardinals celebrated the milestone with their teammate, marking the achievement with a banner.
Mayville opened the tournament with a 2-0 sweep of Wayland Academy before taking down host Fall River by the same score.
The Lady Cards kept rolling against Abundant Life, picking up another 2-0 victory before closing out the day with a 2-0 win over Marshall.
Mayville finished the tournament unbeaten, winning all eight sets played.
The Cardinals improved to 16-4 overall and remained 3-0 in Flyway Conference play.
Mayville returns to the road Tuesday, Sept. 22, to face Living Word Lutheran (14-5) before traveling to Lomira (1-14, 0-3) on Thursday, Sept. 24, for another Flyway Conference matchup.
