Horicon School District Receives Overview on Federal Funding

Posted

On Thursday, March 20, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order to close the U.S. Department of Education (USDE).
On Monday, March 17, prior to the signing, the School District of Horicon received and shared a flyer with the Board of Education from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) highlighting the impact federal funding has on the District. Flyers for any school district in the state can be found by visiting dpi.wi.gov/policy-budget/federal-funding.
A paragraph at the top of the page states, “Recent executive orders and proposed cuts threaten vital federal funding and programs that support Wisconsin’s public schools and libraries. These resources support students with disabilities, economically disadvantaged students and families, youth mental health programs, English language learners, smaller class sizes, and help fund important initiatives like access to school meals, career and technical education, academic opportunities, and more.”
DPI determined federal funding in the amount of $799,696 given to Horicon makes up eight percent of total funding. DPI further broke down that number to $434,063 coming from the U.S. Department of Education and $365,633 coming from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
They added that the funds Horicon receives from the USDE is the equivalent to the cost of hiring four educators.

Board Matters:
• The Board approved the rescindment of the Title IX Policy from 2024 and reinstatement of the policy from August 2020.
• The Board approved resignations from the District Speech Pathologist and MS/HS Choir Teacher. Those job openings have been posted, along with an opening for a full-time, second shift cleaner position.
• Horicon Bank received the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators (WASDA) Bert Grover Child Advocacy Award-Business for 2025. This award is given to “an individual or agency that has exhibited extraordinary dedication to the cause of child advocacy in the state of Wisconsin.”
• Registration for summer school is open. There are 75 courses available to kindergarten through high school students. As of meeting time, 94 elementary, 60 middle school, and 27 high school students had registered. More information can be found on the district website.
• Area seniors are encouraged to visit the Horicon Recreation Department Facebook page where they can find an online survey to complete that will help determine events and activities to be planned this summer.
