The Mayville cross country teams battled muddy and slippery course conditions Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Flyway Conference Championship meet at Kiekhaefer Park, with three Cardinals earning all-conference recognition.
Head coach Bob Berry said the varsity teams did not finish as well as hoped, with difficult footing making for a challenging afternoon of racing. The Cardinal girls finished sixth with 132 points, while the boys placed seventh with 169 points.
Lomira claimed the girls conference championship, followed by Winnebago Lutheran Academy in second and Campbellsport in third. On the boys side, Campbellsport took the conference title, with St. Mary’s Springs finished second and Omro third.
Samara Herzog led the Cardinal girls with her best race of the season, finishing eighth overall to earn second-team All-Flyway Conference honors.
Mette Genz also turned in a strong performance, placing ninth to earn honorable mention all-conference recognition.
On the boys side, Phoenix Ellingson finished 23rd, earning honorable mention all-conference honors.
The Mayville junior high team had a strong showing, finishing third overall. Ian Cloninger led the Cardinals with a first-place finish, while Josiah Brown placed seventh.
Mayville now turns its attention to postseason competition, traveling to Kewaskum on Friday, Oct. 23, for the WIAA D2 Sectional 7 meet at 4:15 p.m.
