Posted

The Mayville boys soccer team closed its 2026 season with a 10-12-2 overall record following a 3-1 loss to Watertown Luther Prep in a WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal Thursday, Oct. 22.

The No. 10-seeded Cardinals traveled to face the No. 7-seeded Phoenix, who advanced to the regional final with the victory.

The loss marked the second meeting between the teams this season. Watertown Luther Prep also defeated Mayville 4-1 in a nonconference matchup Sept. 8.

Under head coach Bill Brownlow, the Cardinals finished 5-4 in conference play, with season highlights including a tournament championship at Wautoma and a four-match winning streak in October.

Mayville opened its season Aug. 25 with a 4-2 victory over Cedar Grove-Belgium before facing a difficult stretch of losses.

The Cardinals returned to the win column Sept. 12 at the Wautoma tournament, defeating the host team 3-2 before tying Prairie du Chien 1-1 and advancing on penalty kicks, 5-3. Mayville then defeated River Valley 2-1 to capture the tournament title.

Following the tournament, Mayville recorded conference victories over Lomira, 7-1, and Omro, 5-0.

Another highlight came Oct. 2, when the Cardinals overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat Green Bay NEW Lutheran 3-2. Jezer Blanco scored 19 seconds into the second half, while Jaxson Haylett-Bauer converted two penalty kicks to complete the comeback.

That victory started a four-match winning streak that continued through homecoming week. Mayville defeated Central Wisconsin Christian 3-1, Berlin 8-0 and Campbellsport 8-0, outscoring opponents 19-1 over the three matches.

The Cardinals celebrated Senior Night against Berlin and Parents Night against Campbellsport, with eight different players scoring in the victory over the Cougars.

Brownlow credited the team’s late-season success to improved defensive pressure, balanced scoring and growing confidence.

“Having success scoring goals and winning games is important for the home stretch,” Brownlow said. “The boys have built a ton of trust in each other and it gives them the confidence that we are never out of a game.”

Mayville finished its regular season with losses to Winnebago Lutheran and Lake Mills and a 2-2 tie against St. Mary Catholic before entering postseason play.

The regional loss to Watertown Luther Prep brought the Cardinals’ season to a close.
