Mayville United Methodist Church is weaving sleeping mats from plastic shopping bags. The mats are great for those who need a barrier between them and the hard ground. They can be used for disaster relief, for the homeless, and for those who need temporary sleeping arrangements.
Bags are cut, tied together and then hand-woven on a loom that is about 3’ wide and 6’ long. The church purchased the wooden loom from Midwest Missions in Illinois in June. Church members have been weaving since then. In addition, we took the loom to National Night Out in August at the TAG Center. Children, teens and adults all took part in the weaving project. To date, we have completed three mats.
