Two of Lomira’s Football State Champions will play in the WFCA All-Star Game

Posted

On July 19, Taylor Schaumberg and Sam Schraufnagel from Lomira’s State Football Championship team will put on their Lomira Lions’ helmets one final time at UW-Oshkosh for the South-Small team.
When did you start playing football?
“I started playing flag football in third grade, and then continued into organized tackle football once I reached fifth grade,” said Taylor Schaumberg.
“I started football from a very young age, playing flag football starting all the way when I was in kindergarten,” said Sam Schraufnagel.

What are your favorite football moments?
“Some of my favorite moments in my high school career were getting to return punts on varsity as a freshman, scoring my first touchdown sophomore year, beating Springs my senior year on homecoming in a crazy atmosphere, and finally helping the team to bring home our first state championship,” said Schaumberg. “Other favorite moments would be going out to eat with teammates, as well as celebrating with the student section after wins.”
“Winning state as a senior for the first time in school history, committing to Winona State, and falling in love with the game when I first picked up a football,” said Schraufnagel.
Why is football important to you?
“Football is important to me because playing the sport has taught me how to fight through adversity and overcome certain odds that may be against you, plus our team shared an unbreakable bond that we wouldn’t have gotten if we didn’t play football,” said Schaumberg. “Football has also helped me to develop relationships with so many different people, whether it be with my teammates, coaches, or others through different camps and college recruiting. It has been a big part in what got me to where I am today.”
“Football has always been important to me from a young age, and the love of the game came from my Grandpa, Uncle, but most importantly my Dad, who pushed me every step of the way from a young age,” said Schraufnagel. “Carrying the family legacy and love for football is the most important thing for me, and as long as I have the opportunity to play, I’m going to find a way to.”
Who have been the biggest influences on you during your football career?
“There have been a ton of influences on me throughout my football career, with the first being my dad, who coached me through flag football as well as 5th and 6th-grade tackle football. He always shared with me his knowledge that he had whenever he had the chance and sparked my interest in football at a young age,” said Schaumberg. “Another person that influenced me was Coach Obrigewitch, as he instilled confidence in me my freshman year, as I was a young kid trying to find my footing in the high school scene. He’s the one who made me believe that I could be good.”
“Coach Gregory also had a lasting influence on me as he prepared our senior class through his first few years as head coach. This started when he played a lot of us seniors back when we were underclassmen during our sophomore year, which got our feet wet and gave us some great in-game experience that proved to be helpful to us,” said Schaumberg.
“My dad has had the biggest influence and impact on me as a young player and man,” said Schraufnagel.
Future Plans
“I will be playing one last game this summer on July 19th in the WFCA All-Star game for the South-Small team. As far as football in college goes, I received a solid amount of interest to play at the next level following this past season; however, I will not be continuing with football after this summer. Instead, I’ll be entering the trades and getting into plumbing,” said Schaumberg.
“I will be playing football at Winona State in NCAA Division Two College Football,” said Schraufnagel.
”Taylor and Sam epitomize what Lomira Football is all about because they put their teammates and the program above all else and have left a legacy/standard of excellence that future teams will work tirelessly to uphold with their work ethic, drive, and determination. That is what I will always remember most about them,” said Head Coach Bryan Gregory. “They carried themselves as winners before they were ever crowned champions. Having the opportunity to represent Lomira Football, the School District, and the entire community on the football field one final time is something I know they look forward to. It has been an honor to call myself their coach, and I look forward to seeing what is next for both of them.”
