North Fond du Lac used defensive pressure and control of the glass to pull away from Mayville in a 62-30 conference win Tuesday night, handing the Cardinals another tough lesson against an experienced Orioles squad.
Mayville struggled to find an offensive rhythm throughout the night, plagued by bad passing and turnovers that limited scoring opportunities. Despite the offensive woes, the Cardinals continued to play aggressive defense and battled on the floor, forcing North Fond du Lac to work for its points.
Freshman Ady Christian led Mayville with seven points and three assists, while fellow freshman Brielle Ehlers added seven points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Reagan Hardesty chipped in five points, and the Cardinals showed flashes of ball movement but were unable to sustain momentum against the Orioles’ pressure.
North Fond du Lac built a 27-14 halftime lead and extended it in the second half behind strong rebounding and balanced scoring, controlling the tempo and second-chance opportunities.
The Lady Cardinals were back on the road for conference play Saturday, Jan. 17, traveling to Winnebago Lutheran Academy (6-6, 2-4), where Mayville fell 75-24. The loss drops the Cardinals to 4-10 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
Looking ahead to a busy week, Mayville was set to host conference-leading Laconia (8-6, 7-0) on Tuesday, Jan. 20, after the print deadline, before returning to the road to face Omro (11-3, 4-3) on Friday, Jan. 23, with tipoff at 7 p.m.
