Mayville struggled to find its rhythm offensively as the Cardinals dropped a 67–32 loss to Lomira in a girls' basketball matchup Thursday night.
The Lions jumped out to a 41–22 halftime lead, taking advantage of missed close-range opportunities by Mayville. Senior Layla Budahn was limited early after getting into foul trouble in the first half, disrupting the Cardinals’ offensive flow.
Despite the final score, Mayville showed defensive improvement after the break, holding Lomira to 26 second-half points. Brielle Ehlers anchored the interior defense with several strong blocks, helping the Cardinals tighten things up in the paint.
Ady Christian led Mayville with eight points, while Pearl Witek and Madison Justman each scored six. Brooke Waas and Layla Budahn added five points apiece, and Ehlers chipped in two. Witek connected on a pair of three-pointers, with Waas and Christian each knocking down one from beyond the arc. Mayville finished with 11 field goals and went 6-of-10 from the free-throw line.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to (5–16, 1-10) on the season.
Senior Night Effort Comes Up Short as Cardinals Fall to Ozaukee
Mayville honored its seniors Tuesday night before tipoff, recognizing Layla Budahn, Lydia Case and Madison Justman, before hosting Ozaukee in a nonconference matchup at Mayville High School.
The Cardinals showed strong energy coming out of the Senior Night ceremony taking an early lead, but Ozaukee found momentum and carried a 31–23 halftime lead and held off Mayville in the second half to secure a 68–58 victory.
Freshman Ady Christian led the Cardinals with 17 points, knocking down two three-pointers and adding three assists. Senior Layla Budahn followed with 16 points on an efficient 8-of-14 shooting night and paced Mayville on the boards with nine rebounds, along with four steals and two blocks. Fellow senior Madison Justman chipped in 11 points and ran the offense with a game-high eight assists.
Mayville forced 27 steals and shared the ball well with 18 assists, but turnovers and missed free throws slowed momentum as Ozaukee maintained its advantage down the stretch.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals continued to compete until the final buzzer, showing resilience and balance on a night that celebrated the program’s seniors.
The Lady Cardinals host WLA (8-11, 4-6) in a conference matchup on Tuesday, Feb. 10, before heading to NFDL (5-15, 8-3)) on Friday, Feb. 13, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
