Selgrad Ready to Lead New Era of Husticon Football
HORICON — When Andrew Selgrad accepted the head football coaching position at Horicon High School, he brought with him more than two decades of coaching experience, a state championship pedigree and a vision for building a program rooted in hard work, consistency and community.
Selgrad, who began serving the Horicon School District on July 1, 2026 as athletic director and middle/high school assistant principal, has quickly immersed himself in the Marshfalcon football program while continuing to get acquainted with the rest of the district.
“I have gotten to know the football team very well and I am excited about our team,” Selgrad said. “We have done some team activities that are not football related, such as paintball and a team cookout. This group of young men loves being together and their attitude is infectious.”
Selgrad arrives in Horicon with an impressive résumé. During his 20-year coaching career, he guided Columbus High School to a WIAA Division 4 state championship while earning recognition as both the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association/Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Year and the Associated Press High School Football Coach of the Year.
Despite those accomplishments, Selgrad says the foundation of every successful program has remained the same throughout his career.
“Everywhere I have coached, the same theme emerges for what creates a successful team and program — it starts in the weight room,” he said. “I want to build a weight room culture, not just for football, but for all athletes. It takes hard work and commitment from everyone — coaches, players, families and the district. I am confident that everyone at Horicon is pulling in the same direction.”
Although he now serves the district in multiple leadership roles, Selgrad says his approach to coaching will remain unchanged.
“I am who I am,” he said. “I want to bring stability and consistency, so being true to who I am allows the team to know what to expect.”
The Marshfalcons enter the 2026 season with a youthful roster, but Selgrad believes the team’s enthusiasm and athleticism will allow them to compete.
“We’re going to be young, but the guys are hungry for success,” he said. “They are learning fast and building a strong team bond. We have team speed, which we will utilize to implement our schemes on offense and defense.”
Selgrad has already set the bar high for his first season leading the Marshfalcons.
“We expect to be successful and we have set a goal for returning to the playoffs,” he said.
Fans can expect an aggressive style of play each Friday night.
“We are going to be a fast, physical football team,” Selgrad said. “A team that competes for all 48 minutes.”
Beyond wins and losses, Selgrad hopes to make a lasting impact on student-athletes through each of his roles within the district.
“I want all of our athletes to compete to their fullest potential, to embrace hard work, to embrace the grind that sports can offer, which will translate into anything they choose to do after they leave the halls of Horicon High School,” he said. “My job is to continue to encourage and push them.”
He also believes long-term success begins long before players reach the varsity level.
“Youth is vital to the building of a program,” Selgrad said. “You can have a good team from time to time, but if you want consistent success, it starts with building the youth program so that they can carry forward the tradition.”
As Husticon prepares to begin its first season in a new conference, Selgrad is optimistic about what lies ahead and hopes the community will be part of the journey.
“Are you ready for some football?!” he said. “It’s going to be a fun season. Come out and cheer on our young men as they compete in a new conference with new opportunities. It’s going to be a heck of a ride.”
Husticon will open the 2026 season Thursday, Aug. 13, with a preseason scrimmage against Omro at Ripon’s Ingalls Field. The Marshfalcons will then begin the regular season on the road Friday, Aug. 21, at Lomira, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
