The Horicon boys’ basketball team was handed their first Trailways-East Conference loss of the season on Friday, Jan. 9, falling to rival Oakfield with a final score of 51-38. The defeat puts both teams at a 7-2 overall record, though Oakfield remains undefeated at 5-0 in conference play, with Horicon dropping to 5-1.
The Marshmen came out strong, showing impressive offensive rhythm early on. Barrett Meyer broke the early 2-2 tie with a three-pointer, immediately followed by a defensive steal and a fast-break layup for Quin Jackl, assisted by Meyer, making it 7-2. Jackl then connected on a three-pointer on the following possession. Oakfield, however, managed to creep back into the game, narrowing the gap to 11-10 before Meyer hit another three-pointer from the left corner. Despite the strong start, Horicon fell behind by halftime.
In the second half, the gap widened, with Horicon trailing 16-28 even after Meyer hit another three-pointer. The deficit grew to 20 points, 44-24, before Christian Schwartz finally connected on a three from the left corner.
The second half was defined by a determined defensive effort from the Marshmen. Pressure on the Oakfield point guard led to a steal by Schwartz, who quickly passed to Meyer for a layup. This defensive intensity continued, leading to another steal that resulted in a two-point basket for Vorlob. As the clock wound down, Horicon’s pressure forced one final steal, allowing Jay Graven to score the last points of the night for the Marshmen.
Though the final score favored Oakfield, the defensive hard work put in by Horicon during the second half highlights their effort in a tough conference matchup. The game marked the first time this season the Marshmen were held to a score below 60 points.
